Springtime Progress

May has been good to us, as has our little greenhouse. We are steadily moving veggie starts into their planting beds in the garden.

We have also been working hard on refreshing irrigation systems, upgrading existing planting beds and streamlining the border fence for the central planting zone.

Things are coming together nicely and we anticipate a great season ahead of us with more variety in the garden than ever!

Nicole planted the three level bed with lots of onions and garlic- yum!

The baby fence is very temporary, soon to be replaced by a low profile hardware cloth type material.

Square Foot Garden Refresh and Expansion

So as you saw in yesterday's post, we are adding more planting beds to the garden this year. Plenty of starts in the greenhouse will soon be enjoying life in brand their brand new homes.

I'll be tidying up the grass around the grey plastic beds here, and then placing all the garden bricks back on a fresh bed of gravel.

When that is done, we will pull the plastic frames from this spot, leaving only the bricks in place. We will then re-use the grey plastic frames to make fresh beds next to the 5x5 red composite beds, both along the back (Eastern) edge of the property.

All told we will basically double our past square footage with this expansion!

Pics of the process to follow.

Harvesting mason bee larvae

Spring is approaching, and we are beginning to prep the backyard for this season's garden. Here are a couple pics of Nicole harvesting our Mason Bee larvae! These docile little bees pollinate trees and flowers without stinging or harassing people, and return every season to their habitat.
